Discovering Djerba
The Tunisian island of Djerba is a seaside destination that stretches over 150 km of coastline including 23 km of beaches, mainly on the east coast, in the tourist area of Midoun. Inland, olive fields alternate with traditional whitewashed houses called “menzels”. It is not uncommon to come across herds of goats outside the main roads and camels in the shade of palm trees.
You will have the opportunity to stroll through the alleys of Houmt-Souk to do your shopping and discover the art of pottery. You may take a camel ride on the beach or cross the lagoon on horseback. And why not visit the troglodyte dwellings of Tataouine? Or even the largest crocodile farm in the Mediterranean and its 400 residents…
Some cultural places not to be missed during your visit to Djerba: the Jemaâ El Bessi mosque, the Fadhloun mosque (near Midoun), the Ghriba synagogue, the Museum of Popular Art and Traditions, the Ghazi Mustapha fort (13th century) and the archaeological ruins of Meninx (ancient name of Djerba).
